Amba Ambalika and Ambika

Bhishma addressing the king of Kashi said : My brother Vichitravirya is the king of Hastinapur. I have come on his behalf to carry away your daughters as his wives.
Climbing on to his chariot with the three sisters, he said if any one wanted to challenge him, he was ready for a duel.
Weapons started showering on Bhishma., Having learnt his skills from the greatest of the teachers, Bhishma was easily able to combat every weapon hurled at him.
Many warriors fell dead on the field.
The king of Shalva challenged Bhishma. A great fight started between the two great warriors. Bhishma was able to take control and cut off his chariot. The king of Shalva fled from the battlefield and Bhishma did not pursue him.

Reaching Hastinapur, Bhishma started preparations for the wedding of Vichitravirya. He asked the priests to get ready.

The three princesses then sat next to Vichitravirya. The eldest of the three, Amba then spoke to Bhishma : You are a learned person, son of Shantanu. Of all the kings present, I have given my heart to the king of Shalva. My father had agreed to this wish of mine. I would request you to please give me away to the king of Shalva.

Bhishma and the present brahmanas agreed and Amba approached the king of Shalva. Having faced a defeat in the hands of Bhishma, the king refused to accept her.

Knowing that Bhishma would not marry her, Amba sad and ashamed lit a pyre. Stepping into the fire she said she had suffered injustice because of Bhishma and wanted to be born to be the cause of Bhishma's death.

Ambalika and Ambika, the other two sisters got married to Vichitravirya. Soon after, Vichitravirya developed tuberculosis and passed away childless.

  2. Yes, these are names of Durga. No, these characters have no link with Durga and their parents may have just named them after the names of Durga.
