The Gods and Asuras were in constant wars. They appointed priests for both sides. While Brisahpati was the priest for the Gods, Shukracharya became the priest for the asuras. Shukra knew the mantras for reviving the dead and when the asuras would be killed in the wards between Gods, Shukra would bring them back to life. The same was not possible for Brihaspati. The Gods decided to do something. They approached Kacha, son of Brihaspati and asked him to learn the mantra form Shukra.
He was asked to go to Shukra and stay with him as his disciple and learn the mantra and bring that back to the Devas. Shukra had a daughter, Devyani. Kacha was told to go and become friendly with Devyani.
Kacha went to Shukra and introduced himself and became a disciple of Shukra.
In Shukra's ashrama, Kacha learnt all that he could. He also served Devyani, getting her whatever she wished for, and also entertaining her by singing and dancing.
One day Shukra asked Kacha to go to the fields to graze the cattle. The asuras saw Kacha with the cattle. Knowing him to be the son of Brihaspati, They attacked him, killed him cut his body into pieces and fed him to the wild beasts.
Shukra saw the cattle return without Kacha in the evening. Devyani, missing Kacha, went to her father and asked him if knew where Kacha was. Shukra realizing what had happened to Kacha, said I will revive him with my mantras. Devyani wanted to know where he was, and Kacha said he had been killed when he went out with the cattle.
Devyani forbade him going with the cattle ever again.
